How we chose
We compared the approaches described below: platform, early access, editing after sealing, delivery and what happens when a capsule returns. This is a practical selection framework, not a measured reliability study or proof that every service will survive for years. We do not add prices or features that the individual descriptions do not establish.

What actually separates these apps
Ignore the feature lists. There are only four questions worth asking.
Can you open it early? If yes, you will. Everyone does. An app that lets you peek is a diary with a countdown on it.
Can you edit it after sealing? This matters more than it sounds. The value of a letter from your past self is that it was written by someone who did not know how things turned out. One edit and that is gone.
Will it actually reach you? A capsule that unlocks in five years has to survive an app being abandoned, an email address being closed, a phone being replaced.
What happens when it arrives? Almost every app in this category stops at delivery. You read the thing, feel something for ninety seconds, and close it. Very few do anything with the moment.

The original, and still the simplest. You write in a browser, pick a date, and it emails you the letter. Nothing to install, nothing to learn.
Where it falls short: over long horizons it depends on that email address still existing and the message clearing the spam filter, and there is no reply mechanic — the letter arrives and that is the end of it.
Best for: trying the idea once with zero commitment and nothing to install.

The media-first capsule apps

If that is what you want, check two things on the store listing before you commit: when the app was last updated, and whether the free tier covers the unlock and not just the creation.

- You want to write, and you want it to hurt a little when it comes back — pick something with a hard lock and a reply mechanic.
- You want to keep photos and video for a decade — pick a media-first app, and keep a separate backup of the same files.
- You want to try it tonight, free, without installing anything — use an email-based service.
- You are on Android — the options are thinner. Check update dates carefully before trusting one with five years.
One thing worth knowing before you pick any of them
Every app on this list is a business, and it has to still exist on the day your capsule unlocks. For six months, that is a safe bet. For ten years, it is not.
So use an app for the letters you will actually write on a one-to-three-year horizon, and paper in a box for the once-in-a-lifetime ones. And if something is important enough that losing it would hurt, keep a second copy somewhere else.
